The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has launched the RHA Smart Test, an exclusive service provided by ScreenSafe with its own dedicated website and 24/7 customer service to provide the ability to cover all aspects of drug and alcohol screening – including policy writing, sample collection, laboratory analysis, training and education.

Sue Carter at ScreenSafe commented: “Drug and alcohol problems are serious health and safety issues for the workplace, and especially for safety-critical jobs such as people with the responsibility for driving tens of thousands of miles a year in vans, trucks and lorries. A report last year estimated one million workers were taking drugs.”

She added: “Well considered, legally correct and properly implemented policies protect not only an employer but also their employees, and provide reassurance that the testing is being carried out legitimately. The RHA Smart Test is an example of a best-practice model that other employers and trade associations should consider, as it provides professional support for their staff with a drug and alcohol policy that places emphasis on health, safety and education.”

The 1992 Transport and Works Act makes it a criminal offence for certain workers to be unfit to work as a result of drugs and/or alcohol.  Employers too can be prosecuted unless they can prove they have carried out all due diligence in trying to prevent such an offence being committed. RHA Smart Test can help operators formulate such a policy, regardless of company size.

ScreenSafe are experts in the provision of drug, alcohol and blood borne virus testing services. They provide bespoke training and testing by analysing results from oral fluid, urine, hair or blood samples.

RHA and transport operators with concerns in their workplace around substance misuse or who would like to find out more about how they can protect they company and employees can call 0330 100 2495 or email rha@screensafe.co.uk. All enquiries are strictly confidential.
