Following the enormous success of last year’s inaugural three-day charity bike ride from Manchester to Amsterdam that raised over £20,000, TIP’s ‘Fat Bottomed Boys’ have smashed through this total in 2015, already raising nearly £40,000 for charity; this time cycling more than 300 kms from Manchester to Galway in Ireland.

According to Charity Ride sponsor, TIP Trailer Services Managing Director Mike Furnival, “Once more, we challenged a crack squad of ageing athletes to complete a windy, winding bicycle journey from our UK HQ in Manchester. Instead of turning right out of our offices and aiming for Amsterdam, the team of 44 cyclists turned left out of the gates and set off to reach our Celtic cousins in Galway.” 

The 2015 team included cyclists from the UK and Ireland, drawn from TIP staff, valued customers and loyal suppliers from all corners of the transport industry.

Day 1 took the scenic route to Liverpool on a wet and windy day across the rolling Cheshire plains. Day 2 was a punishing, windy leg across the Emerald Isle from Dublin to Athlone. Day 3 and the sore limbs were focussed on the final 110kms to the champagne reception at the finish line in Galway City.

“Last year, we had glorious weather for the Amsterdam challenge, but this year was completely different! Horizontal rain and a strong westerly wind made conditions really tough on Day 1. Thankfully Days 2 and 3 remained rain free, however, the wind was ever present,” said Mike Furnival, “The group showed amazing resilience and teamwork to get a variety of abilities over the finishing line. The lure of the Guinness probably helped as well!”

Mike continues, “We are nearing £40,000 in pledges for our chosen charities but the site will remain open until the end of July to capture all outstanding pledges. Hopefully the final total will continue to grow right up to the cut-off date.”

“Once again, we have been overwhelmed by the donations from the transport industry to support these deserving charities. It is vital to their continued progress and the team are incredibly grateful for the fantastic support we’ve received.” added Furnival.

The money raised is to be divided between three charities: the national charity for Cancer Research, the regional charity of Donna Louise who care for terminally ill children and their families, and the Air Ambulance Service.
