Quality prevails at TOM Vehicle Rental with the introduction of 155 new SDC Trailers as part of the company’s ongoing £130million investment. The deal was welcomed by manufacturer SDC which specialises in innovative and bespoke trailer engineering, providing a trailer solution that “fits” their customer’s needs.

SDc Trailers webA number of the new trailers have already joined TOM’s modern fleet as the rental company strives to provide the complete “one stop shop” for their customers throughout the UK.

The 155 trailer order has seen 52 trailers go into production at SDC’s Toomebridge and Mansfield manufacturing plants in 2015, with a further 103 trailers on the build sheet for 2016. The trailers supplied by SDC include a mix of 4.2m, 4.4m, 4.5m and 4.8m curtainsiders with specifications and livery tailored to suit TOM’s wide-ranging customers. The vehicle rental company have also ordered a number of 4.8m tri-axle step-frame curtainsiders from SDC.

Robert Stewart, TOM’s Group Managing Director said “we placed the order for 155 new curtainsider trailers with SDC as part of our growth and fleet renewal program. We currently have over 10,000 vehicles available throughout the UK and are on schedule to double our hire fleet over the next three years. Quality and customer satisfaction are key to the growth and success of T.O.M as we explore a range of new business avenues and SDC trailers have always served us well in the past. Their flexibility in the trailer design process is a great advantage to us and our rental customers as we can build the trailer to fulfil specific loading and transport requirements.”

SDC Trailers Scottish Sales Manager Richard Stanley, who worked with TOM to outline their trailer specifications in line with customer requirements commented: “I would like to thank TOM. for choosing SDC for their fleet expansion, the 155 trailer order has been a welcome addition to our production. At SDC we strive to ensure our trailers deliver a solid return on investment and will contribute to the profitability of TOM’s business for many years into the future.”
The entire build from raw steel right through to livery is carried out at one of SDC Trailers production plants. With over 37 years’ experience in bespoke trailer engineering, SDC have established portfolio of highly robust and durable products ranging from curtainsiders and box vans to skeletals, platforms, urban trailers and extended length trailers.

As 2015 comes to a close, SDC have reported another record year of trailer manufacturing with some 9,400 new trailers engineered at their facilities in Mansfield (Nottinghamshire) and Northern Ireland throughout the year. With a strong focus on innovation and customer satisfaction, SDC have secured a majority share of their local market and are recognised as one of the top five trailer manufacturers in Europe. With the adoption of new technology, a 30,000sq ft. production expansion and growing staff numbers, the company rolls out an impressive 200 trailers weekly from their state of the art manufacturing plants.

SDC have also been working on an apprentice program in 2015 with ongoing staff training to ensure their high standard of workmanship is maintained throughout each stage of the production process. In July SDC received the ‘Innovation’ Motor Transport Award along with Scottish Haulier Malcolm Logistics for their forward thinking extendable skeletal trailer, designed to carry 50ft containers and significantly increase the efficiency and flexibility of operations. The company have also increased their market share on an international scale, with a number of orders for new trailers and commercial vehicle parts in the Middle East.
