Moving 100 tons of oil rig equipment requires specialist vehicles with outstanding axles. The Macro Group in Ghana were recommended to contact Andover Trailers in the UK to supply a suitable low bed trailer for moving heavy components from the port at Takoradi, to a distribution point 30 kilometres inland and back again to the port.Trailer for the Macro Group

Roland Azalimah, Group General Manager at Macro Group Limited explained, “We were advised by Andover Trailers from their vast experience, on how they would build a purpose built trailer based on the SWL of equipment/materials for the carrying of oil rig equipment. The Macro Group is the first to order this type of low bed into Ghana and it’s the latest design in Takoradi suitable for moving all types of equipment for the oil companies as far as reliability and safety is concerned.”

Ivan Collins, Sales Director of Andover Trailers continued “We used four axle SAF Multi-Leaf Spring Type VRZ (64 tonne) mechanical suspensions with axles for this specialist trailer which gave an efficient axle load distribution. With the trailer being longer and heavier than normal and being used on difficult terrain, the tried and trusted SAF system gave the quality and reliability required. Raj Mistry at IMS, the UK distributors for SAF, helped us throughout the whole process with excellent customer service, ensuring the correct technical specification was supplied on time.”

SAF Axles are now main suppliers for conventional trailers to Andover and more export orders are expected over the next few months.

Benefits of the SAF Multi-Leaf Spring Suspension Type VRZ

Higher payloads due to the use of weight-optimised sturdy components

Good manoeuvrability of the tractor/trailer combination thanks to short wheel bases (1,360mm)

Long service life of the equalisers due to the support by brass bushings

Efficient axle load distribution by high compensation travel. This also means a uniform braking force distribution, and consequently a uniform brake lining wear, higher vehicle stability and safer riding performance

Longer service life of the springs and mounting brackets through the use of low-wear, exchangeable spring sliding plates
