Irish haulage operators are facing a three-fold increase in waste tyre disposal costs, under new waste management proposals, HGVIreland.com can reveal.Alan Kelly TD
Environment Minister, Alan Kelly is poised to introduce new waste management regulations, that we see haulage operators pay up to €25 per tyre to dispose of their waste tyres. The levy will be applied at the point of purchase in the form of an Environmental Management Charge. (EMC).

Tyre industry sources have told HGVIreland.com, that in an ultra-competitive market, hauliers have paid an average €8 per tyre to their tyre retailer to dispose of their tyres, but that figure is set to soar under new regulations currently before the Minister.

The EMC for car tyres has been set at € 3.40 per tyre, and with truck tyres weighing seven to eight times heavier, tyre industry sources say that hauliers could be facing a levy of € 25 or more.

Independent TD Mattie McGrath has called on the Minister to postpone the inbtroduction of the new regulations following an Oireachtas briefing, he facilitated on behalf of he Independent Tyre Wholesalers & Retailers Association (ITWRA).

The ITWRA fears the new regulations will lead to the elimination of up 1,000 jobs in the industry.
