Targeted at passenger carrying and commercial vehicle workshops, the new scheme aims to raise industry-wide standards in maintenance provision.

Representatives from IRTE (Institute of Road Transport Engineers) and FTA (Freight Transport Association) visited the two businesses – Redbridge’s workshop in Ilford and Pullman’s Stoke premises – to congratulate the companies on being the first to achieve IRTE Workshop Accreditation.

Redbridge engineering manager, Eddie Cross, explains why being one of the first to gain the accreditation was important to Redbridge: “The fact that we’ve achieved IRTE Workshop Accreditation gives operators confidence in our services, and allows comparisons with providers of similar services. As a service provider, it also gives us confidence that we have a proven, audited system that will keep our drivers and other road users safe.”

Graham Hunter, managing director of Pullman, was also an early champion of the scheme, and intends to pursue the accreditation for the company’s entire network, around 30 premises in total: “The IRTE Workshop Accreditation provides a vindication of our workshop standards and our approach to safety. I’m delighted Pullman are at the forefront of this initiative, which provides an objective assessment of our capabilities as a progressive service provider.”

Pullman’s Stoke site is based at a Sainsbury’s distribution depot, and the supermarket was keen for its maintenance provider to gain the accreditation. Operation support manager for Sainsbury’s, Gary King, attended the IRTE presentation and says: “I’ve always supported an accreditation for VMUs [vehicle maintenance units]. From an industry point of view it helps to improve safety and maintenance standards, and it’s something I have personally been keen for us to fully embrace. At Sainsbury’s we have a large fleet of vehicles and maintaining high maintenance standards is paramount to us – we need to ensure we always get the best service to the highest standards.”

Ian Chisholm, head of operations and communications at IRTE’s umbrella organisation, SOE (Society of Operations Engineers), congratulated the two companies, and says: “Pullman and the London Borough of Redbridge are leading the way in excellence with the maintenance and repair of commercial vehicles. These workshops have always displayed the highest standards in the work they carry out, but the fact their customers can now be absolutely confident in the level of maintenance they receive is an importance step forward for the industry.”

Operators and maintenance providers who have signed up to the scheme include HRVS, Müller Wiseman, and Arriva Midlands. To find out more about IRTE Workshop Accreditation go towww.irteworkshop.org.uk or call 020 7630 2134.
