The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has published new guidance on fitting side guards, which are also known as lateral protection devices (LPDs).

A side guard (or LPD) helps lower the likelihood of injury to ‘unprotected road users’ when struck by a forward-moving vehicle. It’s there to deflect and stop people going underneath the sides of the vehicle.

Aims of the new guidance

The new Side Guards (Lateral Protection Device) guidance aims to encourage best practice when fitting side guards. It shows good and bad examples that apply to both:

  • lorries and other vehicles in the N2/3 category
  • heavy trailers and other vehicles in the O3/4 category

At the same time, the guidance aims to reinforce the current required standards, help you identify common errors and advise you of simple solutions.
