Someone once said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” and yet doing the same thing over and over again is exactly what some drivers do in their Driver CPC training. Despite every driver having to do compulsory driver training, the performance of the fleet in terms of risk doesn’t improve.

All professional drivers operating a HGV, Bus or Coach must have Driver CPC requiring them to complete 35 hours of periodic training over a five year period. Presently, many drivers organise their own training with ‘off-the-shelf’ providers and complete the same course year after year just to complete the required hours to stay compliant. This serves only to keep the driver on the road but does very little to improve the risk of the insured fleet.

Gallagher Bassett is one of the leading claims handling providers in the world and through its risk consulting division has developed Fleet35, a new innovative product enabling fleets to utilise existing budgets set aside for Driver CPC training to improve risks identified in the fleet.

On signing up to Fleet35, a Gallagher Bassett Fleet Risk Consultant carries out a fleet risk management audit and review of incident, collision and claims data in addition to any available telematics management information.

Following the fleet risk audit, a dedicated risk reduction course is then developed which receives independent Driver CPC accreditation for delivery to all drivers within the fleet. On completion of the course, each driver’s attendance is recorded, assessed and then uploaded onto the Fleet35 online portal available for drivers and transport managers to monitor.

In addition, Gallagher Bassett will send periodic reminders to individual drivers within the fleet to keep them informed of how many hours training they need to complete to stay Driver CPC compliant; Transport Managers will receive an email providing a breakdown of all drivers allocated to their fleet.

At the completion of each year, a further Fleet Risk Management Audit and Review is carried out to gain feedback on the performance of Year 1 and to then identify the next risk to focus on for Year 2.

We were delighted to reduce the collision rate by 60% following the delivery of a bespoke Driver CPC course for a large logistics client receiving a glowing testimonial from them “This is great for staff due to reduced risk, great for the business reducing costs and lost time due to absences. Very Cost effective as any one of our incidents could have resulted in costs vastly more than the training without thinking about the cost to other persons, our staff or reputation”.

All courses are delivered on site or at a nearby venue suitable for training to minimise disruption to the organisation.
