When Northern Europe’s largest integrated shipping and logistics company needed another batch of refrigerated trailers for its thriving Irish operation, it charted a course straight back to Gray & Adams.

Gray & Adams 13.6m trailer - DFDS (3)DFDS Logistics has begun taking deliveries of its latest single- and multi-temperature 13.6m trailers, some of which are fitted with tail-lifts. They are joining a fleet based at Belfast Harbour that includes a number of other multi-temperature 13.6m trailers supplied by Gray & Adams (Ireland), of Newtownabbey, last year.

However, it was the manufacturer’s ability to supply highly specialised trailers designed to meet precise requirements which enabled Gray & Adams to secure a ‘foot in the door’ with its high-profile customer two years ago.

DFDS’s first order was for a batch of trailers it has since been operating for a major independent food and drink retail group. These are fitted with the unique Gray & Adams Partition System, which employs individual movable panels that allow internal compartments with differing temperature regimes to be configured in a variety of ways for maximum flexibility. When only single-temperature operation is required, these panels can be folded away or removed completely.

Gray & Adams has also previously supplied DFDS with lifting floor twin-deck trailers, and more recently with 15.65m single-deckers. These are working out of the company’s Peterborough depot as part of a Department for Transport-backed trial of longer trailers which has not been extended to Northern Ireland.

Danish-owned DFDS has been providing refrigerated and ambient transport services for full and part loads between Ireland, and the UK and Europe, for more than 25 years.

DFDS Logistics’ Commercial Director Andy Scott said: “Gray & Adams is widely recognised as the market leader when it comes to bespoke, temperature-controlled transport solutions, but our latest orders have been for more mainstream equipment.

“Gray & Adams continues to secure our business by meeting our requirements on high-quality build standard, competitive pricing and adherence to tight delivery schedules.

“And its service is first class too – under the guidance of Managing Director Billy Dougan, the Gray & Adams (Ireland) team is very attentive, working closely with our own workshop to ensure that our imprest stock of sale-or-return parts is always up to date.

“All of these factors have combined to give Gray & Adams the winning edge.”
