RCS Logistics, a founder member of Palletforce, celebrates its 40th year in 2013, four decades after being set up to deliver sacks of coal locally.

Sustained investment and expansion means RCS Logistics is now one of the leading haulage firms in Northamptonshire and a founding member of Palletforce, the UK and Europe’s leading palletised distribution network.

Today RCS Logistics employs more than 95 people, runs a fleet of 50 vehicles and works with some of the UK’s biggest brands including Bissell and Sistema.

“Despite the doom and gloom of the recession we have continued to go from strength-to-strength,” said Steve Gray, Managing Director.

“We’ve invested significantly over the past decade in our warehousing service and remain focused on further investing in our distribution service.

“All this will help us to strengthen and ensure we can continue to offer a quality service despite the challenging economic times.”

RCS Logistics, originally set up by Ray C Smith, began expanding into general haulage as the demand for coal decreased with the rise of central heating.

Ray soon bought land in Corby, Northamptonshire, where the business is still based, and built a small warehouse. Over the years further warehouses were added and it now has almost 500,000 sq ft of storage space.

Although Ray has passed away, a family connection to the business remains as his son Simon, who was once Managing Director, is still a shareholder.

“We have loyal customers, some of whom have been with us for more than 20 years, and we are able to continue winning new business because of the level of service we provide,” said Steve.

“That is where becoming a founder member of Palletforce has really helped us, as we are able to cater to all sizes of orders.

“We can provide everything a large corporate business can but still retain the family value based business that looks you in the eye, shakes you by the hand and promises to get the job done.”

Michael Conroy, Chief Executive of Palletforce, said: “It is fantastic to see one of our founder members continuing to prosper after all these years.

“RCS Logistics is a real example of how a business can succeed despite changes in markets and the economy if it remains focused on providing a quality service at all times.

“At Palletforce there is a deeply embedded culture of striving to be the best and all our members share this culture which ensures we provide a quality service to all our customers.”
