The Road Haulage Association is saddened to learn of the death of an illegal migrant found in the back of an HGV after it stopped at a lorry park on the A20 in Kent, on Tuesday morning.

Richard-Burnett-web1Commenting, RHA chief executive Richard Burnett said: “This latest migrant death is yet another tragedy that could have been avoided. However, it further enforces our constant requests to see an increase in the numbers of security personnel operating at the Port and on the Calais approach roads.

We warned that the impending closure of the migrant camp, the ‘Jungle’ would inevitably exacerbate the determination of those desperate to reach our shores by whatever means possible and that there was a real danger that lives would be lost. Regrettably it seems that our predictions have become a reality.

Illegal migrants and UK-bound HGV drivers are both victims of circumstance. Every possible measure must be taken to ensure that this doesn’t happen again.”
