Retail giant Tesco has selected John Raymond Transport as its Grocery and General Merchandise Haulier of the Year.

tesco haulierThe prestigious award, which was presented at a recent ceremony in Chester, reflects John Raymond’s outstanding contribution within Primary Distribution operations.

The South Wales and Cannock-based haulier fought off tough competition from several bigger firms, including previous winners Maritime and Eddie Stobart, to clinch the title.

Commenting on the award, John Clark Tesco Primary UK Operations Manager said: “John Raymond have worked very closely with our primary distribution team to successfully deliver new initiatives. These have meant their volume has grown significantly over the last year, but without any negative impact being felt in the service provided to our Distribution Centres.”

John Raymond have worked with Tesco Primary since its inception over 13 years ago, and  have greatly increased volumes handled in recent times to mirror the growth of the retailer’s operations in this area. According to MD Paul Johns, this flexible approach, allied to a strong focus on service, were key factors in their success.

He said: “We made a conscious decision a few years ago to concentrate on growing our FMCG business with a few key account customers, and Tesco was very high on this list. Our Tesco Account Manager, Martin Mitchell, approached our contacts at Tesco to understand what we needed to do better, and since then we have worked very hard at meeting their requirements. It is very pleasing for everyone at John Raymond to achieve this recognition, it is both a real honour, and reward for everyone’s hard work.

“We were, and are, proud of our Welsh roots, but needed to get away from being viewed as solely a Welsh specialist. We now have almost half of our fleet based in England – in addition to this Tesco growth, our involvement with Harlequin has really helped accelerate this process. We operate in collaboration with the other four shareholders to service Harlequin customers across Great Britain, and envisage this becoming an ever-bigger part of our business in the coming months and years.”
